WEDELMUSIC=20 2002

WEDELMUSIC 2002, the = 2nd=20 International Conference on Web Delivery of Music will take place in=20 Darmstadt, Germany, on 9-11 December 2002. The event is being run by = the=20 Interactive Electronic Publishing sector, IST project, WEDELMUSIC and = is=20 sponsored by: Fraunhofer Institute, University of Florence, IRCAM with = the=20 support of the IEEE CS TC on Computer Generated Music. The music = industry's=20 pioneering role in the use of Internet technology to broadcast audio = and music=20 files continues to break new boundaries. However current state of the = art=20 still distributes music either on paper or on CD or similar media. = However,=20 the possibility to distribute music in several other formats, such as=20 symbolic, audio (in its several available formats) and as images of = music=20 scores opens several new avenues for research.

WEDELMUSIC-2002 aims to = deal with=20 these major topics in music-related fields, in order to address new = ways to=20 distribute music to larger audiences. Topics of interest include but = are not=20 restricted to the following aspects:

A call for papers is = open until=20 31 March 2002. Research case studies, applications and experiments are = particularly welcome. Papers of between 2-5,000 words, written in = English=20 should be submitted in PDF format via the email below.

Sustainable Decision=20 Making Conference

Two EU projects, = Terra2000 and=20 ASSIST are arranging a conference on "Sustainable Decision Making" in=20 Maastricht, Netherlands, on February 18-19, 2002. Both projects have=20 particular (and synergistic) interests in building the knowledge = necessary to=20 explain the impacts of Information Society Technologies and the Global = Networked Society, and thus to inform decision making. 21st = Century Literacy=20 Summit

The Bertelsmann = Foundation and=20 the AOL Time Warner Foundation are hosting the "21st Century = Literacy=20 Summit" on March 7-8, 2002 in Berlin, Germany. 21st Century = literacy=20 focuses on the sensible use of information technology and the Internet = in the=20 future, not only in schools, but also in all areas of modern society. = 21st=20 Century literacy encompasses a wide range of abilities and skills that = are=20 needed to enhance education, business and public policy.

The Summit intends to = promote a=20 transatlantic dialogue of decision-makers from politics, business and = academia=20 who can help address these issues. At the Berlin conference, = high-level=20 speakers will present international examples of efforts currently = taking place=20 to meet the challenges related to this "New Literacy". = Challenges will=20 be identified and recommendations put forward on how they should be = met.=20

Working languages of = the=20 conference will be English and German (with simultaneous translation) = and=20 participation is free of charge. Information Society=20 for All

News of a major British = Council=20 conference, TISA2 (Towards an Information Society for All) - "New = Pathways=20 to Knowledge" scheduled for Berlin, Germany on 8-9 March 2002. The = conference builds on the successful conference held in 2001 in = Bologna, where=20 practitioners and policy makers from around Europe met to consider the = present=20 state of development of the emerging Information Society across = Europe.=20

TISA2 takes as its = point of=20 departure that to achieve joint progress everyone involved in the = Information=20 Society must focus on a range of factors and activities that while = implemented=20 in different ways will be underpin all developments. Such factors = include the=20 nature and importance of national and regional Information Society = policies,=20 technical and infrastructure issues relating to the creation of = physical=20 networks and access routes that are available to all (for example ICT = centres=20 in public spaces), the high importance of electronic content and of=20 cooperation and partnership.

A meeting has been = arranged, to=20 present the projects funded under Action Line 2 (filtering and rating) = of the=20 European Commission's Safer Internet Action Plan will be held on 29 = January=20 2002, in Luxembourg. The purpose of the meeting is to:

DocPro - = DocBook=20 transformation

US company, Command = Prompt, has=20 released DocPro 0.2.0, a tool for professional technical authors whom = maintain=20 a large amount of SGML/XML based documentation. The software takes = DocBook=20 documents and transforms them into a user defined format, such as = Postscript=20 or HTML.

According to the = developers,=20 "DocPro will correctly transform multiple documents, to multiple = output=20 formats. It includes the capability to arbitrarily set font sizes, = margins,=20 callout definitions etc... via a GUI interface". Apparently the = GUI=20 provides an easy way (by point and click) to configure DocBook DSSSL = and XSLT=20 stylesheets. The software currently runs on x86 Linux only, though a = release=20 for YellowDog Linux (PPC) and MacOS X is planned. The Deluxe version = comes=20 with the DocParse tools for converting HTML to DocBook. Version 0.7 of the = eXist Open=20 Source XML database is available for download. According to its = developers=20 this release represents a major step forward with respect to stability = and=20 performance. eXist is described as = "an Open=20 Source native XML database with pluggable storage backends and support = for=20 fulltext search. XSLT/XPath = conformance=20 testing

OASIS is requesting = input=20 concerning the creation of its XSLT/XPath Conformance Test Suite. = Broadly=20 speaking, XSLT and XPath are W3C Recommendations for the definition of = the=20 rules to transform XML data into a variety of presentation styles, = such as=20 human readable reports (HTML) or other XML vocabularies.

Games - UK = sales=20 rocket

Figures released by The = European=20 Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) show that UK sales of = video=20 games and other leisure software products and games consoles reached = an all=20 time high in year 2001 with sales values reaching just over =A31.6 = billion, a=20 36% increase on the previous year. 51.2 million units of games = hardware and=20 software were sold during the twelve months, 21% up on the previous=20 year.

The biggest growth area = last year=20 was in sales of console hardware and software boosted by the launches = of the=20 new PS2 and Gameboy Advance consoles. The total value of console = hardware=20 sales increased by 121% on the previous year, reaching an all time = high of=20 =A3567 million on the back of 4 million consoles sold during the year. = The boom=20 in consoles inevitably fed through to software sales with a record = 30.5=20 million units of console software sold (up 26% on last year) worth = =A3711=20 million. The market for home computer software also fared better than = the=20 previous year with the volume of units sold up by 10% to 16.7 million = whilst=20 the value of sales remained static at =A3346 million.

According to ELSPA, the = UK=20 leisure software market is the third largest country market in the = world,=20 after USA and Japan. In the UK, consumers now spend more on leisure = software=20 than on renting videos or cinema visits. In terms of exports, ELSPA = also=20 reported that the value of UK exports of leisure software products = exceeded=20 those for both British film and TV.

UN = Information Society=20 Summit

The United Nations is = promoting=20 the organisation of the World Summit on the Information Society, which = is=20 expected to promote access by all countries to information, knowledge = and=20 communications technologies for development. The INT Media Research = report,=20 "2002 ASP Industry Insight: The Rise of the Provider Web" is = described=20 by its authors as "an in-depth report providing insight into what = direction=20 successful ASPs will take in 2002". Games-to-Teach=20 project

As part of Microsoft = i-Campus, a=20 five-year research alliance between MIT and Microsoft, the = Games-to-Teach=20 Project intends to explore best practices in game design and = production,=20 current educational theory, and emerging technological platforms and = to apply=20 such understandings to new models of computer and video games that = present and=20 explore educational content.

"Until now we've = seen=20 so-called 'edutainment' that has all of the entertainment value of a = bad=20 lecture and the educational value of a bad game," said Henry = Jenkins,=20 director of Comparative Media Studies and principal investigator on = the=20 project. "Our goal is to reverse that polarity by combining = MIT-quality=20 science and engineering subjects with state-of-the-art game=20 design."

Jenkins and his = colleagues=20 believe computer and video games are emerging as a powerful new = teaching=20 medium that enables robust interactivity, providing for new = pedagogical models=20 and stronger collaborations across disciplines. Software AG, Inc. (the = US=20 subsidiary of Software AG) has formed "the Trusted Content = Alliance"=20 along with Lexign and AuthentiDate to develop secure, digital content=20 management, based on each of the companies' expertise in the content=20 management arena. Software AG will provide the content management = solution=20 based on its Tamino XML server; the Lexign Suite is a software = platform for=20 managing trusted transactions in the LAN, Web, or wireless = environment;=20 AuthentiDate adds "legally binding data = non-refutability".
